Once you get hip to ways that everyday action can improve the world, it becomes addicting. You just want to do more and more. Welcome to Sustainability School.

Smart Shopping

Conscious consumerism allows you to vote with your dollarGandhi said “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

We say “Damn straight!

One of the most powerful ways to make the world cleaner, fairer and more interesting is to vote with your dollars in order to support businesses and products that go out of their way to do good in the world.

Of course shopping alone will not save the world, but then neither will voting. We need to fight on all fronts if we are going to take sustainability mainstream. So when you shop, direct your dollars so they reward the good guys, and penalise the bad, and we'll all be a lot closer to where we need to be.

Resources Gandhi would approve of:

Co-op America
This site is chocked full of resources to buy goods and services that are created/managed in a sustainable, good-for-all way. Co-op America has been a big supporter of Larry’s Beans and visa versa.

TreeHugger
Probably the largest green lifestyle site on the internet, with a strong focus on a slick, modern, green aesthetic. 'Hip Not Hippy', as they say themselves. A great place to go for the latest news on new environmental products and services.

SustainLane
Green is good, but what if the product sucks? SustainLane offers user-generated reviews of all things green. You can tell the world about your favorite floor cleaner, or dish the dirt on the poor service at your local macro-biotic organic brown rice fast food joint.

New American Dream
This site is a motherlode of information about living a rocking, happy, full life. Everything from smart shopping to how to stop getting junk mail. Check out their list of 21 things you can buy to make a big difference in the world.

Adbusters
The idea behind Adbusters is to get beyond consumerism and live an independent-minded life rich in experience and free of corporate influence. The vibe is rebellious, edgy and refreshing. They’ve just created their own anti-brand — an organic hemp sneaker designed to “kick Nike’s butt.”
