 |
The "Pros" of Composting (there are no cons!):
- diverts household waste from filling our landfills
- provides a wonderful, nutrient-rich, organic compost that you can use in your yard, garden, and houseplants!
- recycles yard waste
- improves your good karma!

Necessary Components:
Greens are fresher (greener) items that are rich in Nitrogen.
examples: food scraps, grass clippings, weeds, fruit wastes
Browns are dryer (and browner) and are rich in Carbon.
examples: leaves, straw, hay, but NOT brown crayons
Activators help speed up the whole composting process.
examples: coffee grounds! manures, bone meal
A ratio of 2 parts Green to 1 part Brown is a good rule of thumb when adding to your compost mixture.
Mix it up! Give the whole pile a thorough turning ever 7-10 days. This will help the compost to decompose in a more even and effective way.
Patience! Depending on the size, components, and activity of your compost pile, it can take anywhere from 2 to 8 months. But it sure is worth the wait!
Have fun and feel good!
